Green River Intra-county Transit System
GRITS. The Green River Area Intra-county
Transit System (GRITS) serves the Green River Area counties of Daviess, Hancock, Henderson,
McLean, Ohio, Webster and Union, providing paratransit services for rural and low-income citizens.
GRITS is the Medicaid Transportation "broker" and primary transportation services provider for the
seven-county Green River Area.
In addition, GRITS, in consortium with Rural Transportation Enterprise
Consortium (RTEC), based in
Somerset, Kentucky, provides Medicaid transportation "brokerage" and delivery to the Barren River
region. GRITS directly brokers and serves the six-counth area including Butler, Edmonson, Hart, Logan,
Simpson, and Warren counties. RTEC provides the coverage for Adair, Allen, Barren, Green, Metcalfe and
Taylor counties.
Transportation services remains one of the key components to enable elderly,
and disabled citizens access to hosts of needed services. GRITS has become an essential
part of the community making over 100,000 trips per year providing access to physician
care, hospital care, employment, child care, grocery stores, and other qualified services.
Most riders receive services through contracts held with other agencies and programs.

Medicaid Brokerage
In 1999, GRITS became the broker for a wide range of transportation services
under the Empower Kentucky designation. This project entails a multi-
Cabinet collaborative arrangement for providing low-income, Medicaid-eligible service.
GRITS brokers and provides new and expanded transportation services in the Green River
Area for three Kentucky Cabinets: Health and Families, Transporation, and Workforce Development.
As of July 2008, GRITS also began serving six Barren River (Bowling Green) area counties under its
Medicaid Brokerage.

Handicapped Accessible
Individuals certified as disabled are a significant clientele for GRITS. Most
GRITS vehicles are wheel chair equipped. Under contract with the City of Owensboro,
GRITS provides those who are physically challenged transportation for the Owensboro
Transit System (OTS). Services under contract with OTS operate from 6:00 a.m., to
6:00 p.m., six days a week (every day except Sunday). For a service summary, please
