Also, as the Family Resource Center Director, she was responsible for the personnel management of six employees and the day to day operations of all functions of the Center. She previously served as the family advocate at the Center before becoming the director in 1993. Previous to that, she served as a clinical social worker, founder and owner of a private educational support business, Learning Strategies Program Administrator for the Kentucky Department of Education, and a middle and high school teacher.
Suzanne graduated in 1982 from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor of arts in elementary education and learning, behavior disorders. In 1991, she received her Rank 1 and masters in Social Work. She went on to receive her certification in Social Work in 1992.
In 1987, she became a National Learning Strategies Trainer for Kansas University. She instructs and monitors teachers and administrators in Learning Strategies Curriculum through seminar and workshop formats. She continues to consult with school systems as an Educational, Behavioral, and Learning Strategies Specialist. Suzanne delivered over thirty workshops and seminars in the past year.
Suzanne began her own tutoring business in Lexington, Kentucky in 1987. She developed tutorial study skills' programs for eighty primary through advanced post secondary students and was responsible for twelve employees.
In 1989, she became the Learning Strategies Program Administrator for the Kentucky Department of Education where she developed state-wide training programs for teachers to become adult trainers.
In 1994, she was appointed by Mayor David Adkisson to direct Project Parent. Project Parent was an awareness campaign to promote healthy families. The campaign encouraged families to pledge to spend one evening a week together. Two thousand and four families signed pledge cards in 1994.
Suzanne co-authored and implemented a support group for students who have low self-esteem and/or come from dysfunctional families. The main purpose of the group is to teach students skills that will help them cope with stress and to solve problems.
She remains active with Kentucky 4-H Alumni, Kentucky Department of Education; Behavior Task Force, Human Development Council, Junior League of Owensboro, Rolling Heights and Harry Smith Development Centers, and various other community projects.
Suzanne was named to the Who's Who in American Education in 1991. Her husband, Dan Hays, is the executive director of the International Bluegrass Music Association. Suzanne loves to read, water and snow ski and to be around people.
Her areas of interest are in working with families and children, training and supervising others, developing and implementing projects and working in collaborative teams to help improve the community, family and individual systems. She wants to make a contribution of significance towards bettering the lives of children and families by strengthening both the family and neighborhood units.
Suzanne states that it is her mission in life to find the best in herself and others and do whatever is necessary to help all to perform to their fullest potential.
