Audubon Area Community Services, Inc. understands the vital need for reliable transportation for individuals striving to achieve self-sufficiency.

The Green River Intra-county Transit System (GRITS) offers clean, safe, and dependable public transportation at no or low cost. Medicaid-eligible clients without vehicles receive free transportation to approved Medicaid appointments. Additionally, para-transit services and a fee-per-mile service are available to the public.

For over thirty years, GRITS has provided non-emergency transportation covering three regions and 22 counties. We believe that access to reliable transportation is crucial for individuals to reach their goals and improve their quality of life. For more information, please contact your local office.

Region 3 also offers paid fare rides Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at $1.10 per mile with a $4.00 minimum within the Region 3 service area. Fare for miles outside of Region 3 is $1.50 per mile.

Guidelines

GRITS will not deny anyone transportation services because of their race, color, creed, national origin, sex, age, or disability.

When using GRITS, all passengers are subject to the following rules and regulations:

  • In an effort to limit hold times, reservations are limited to 3 trips per call. Please plan your scheduling accordingly.
  • Passengers shall not engage in any disruptive or violent behavior nor use abusive language.
  • Passengers shall not carry flammable liquids, weapons or explosive devices on the bus.
  • No Smoking, Eating, or Drinking.
  • All passengers shall use seat belts.
  • No alcoholic beverages or illegal substances are permitted on buses.
  • No pets, except for Service Animals, are permitted on the bus unless they are placed in a kennel or other device suitable for transportation.
  • Passengers shall not disturb, distract, harass, alarm, or annoy bus driver or other passengers while bus is in motion.
  • Passengers shall not engage in conversation with bus driver while bus is in motion.

Paratransit for Owensboro Transit System

Paratransit is a specialized service for people with disabilities who are not able to ride fixed-route public transportation buses in Owensboro.

Audubon Area Community Services provides paratransit service for the Owensboro Transit System. Paratransit services are available via a shared ride curb-to-curb program for clients certified through the Owensboro Transit System. This service is reservation based and is available within the City of Owensboro. Services can be utilized for medical, pharmacy, beauty shop, or any other location within the city of Owensboro. An application from OTS is required for paratransit eligibility.

Reasonable Accommodations Information

Audubon Area Community Services’ GRITS program is committed to serving persons with disabilities. We back the commitment by providing services that make public transportation both easy and pleasant for persons with disabilities.

We will make reasonable modifications/accommodations to our GRITS program’s operating policies, practices, and procedures to ensure program accessibility. The nature of an individual’s disability will not preclude us from providing full access to its services.

Some exceptions apply. These exceptions include when the modification or accommodation would:

  • Requests for specific vehicle or driver

  • Leaves the vehicle unattended for a lengthy period

  • Cause a direct threat to the health and safety of others

  • Result in a fundamental alteration of the service

  • Is not actually necessary in order for the individual with the disability to access the service

  • Results in an undue financial and administrative burden for AACS/GRITS

  • Exposes vehicles to hazards

Audubon Area Community Services endeavors to ensure that its facilities, programs and services are available to those with disabilities in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA.)
